So, is there something you really don't like about music, something that will turn you off? For me it would have to be cheesy lyrics, repetitive lyrics, lack of real instruments, and live CD's. It's one thing to go to a concert and see a band live, but to go out and buy a live CD of a concert you weren't actually at is pointless to me. Not to mention bands always sound better in the studio than they do live.
Live CDS. DOn't want them.
What I don't like about songs are the latest rap songs which gets over played on the radio. Its good to hear a variety of music, but it gets annoying when you hear the same song ever hour on the radio. I agree with those that were mentioned earlier. Its much better if you attended a live concert than buying their CD performance live. Yes, the studio performance sounds better. Another thing I don't like about music is lyrics that rhyme, but does not make sense. When you try to read rap lyrics, you will laugh your way out of it. Some of those lyrics don't mean any thing. Yeah, it may sound good, but it does not make sense.
Hmmm, let's see. I think what's bothered me about most music since perhaps the Eighties is that every band seems to want to sound the same as far as the recording style goes. Everybody uses the same effects, the same synthesizer sounds, what have you. This is part of why I just don't care for any current music at all, outside of the fact I'm just old and being up-to-date is just irrelevant at my age. Hahahahahaha! Um, I think also sometimes people want to sing or not sing the lyrics in a way that you can't really understand them, unless of course you're a fan of the given music and are used to that style of singing or non-singing. Oh, and although I just never felt rap music was my thing, one trend I find interesting is how a rapper will now track his voice two or three or four times, so you have this rapping choir effect, and it used to be a rapper needed to only record his voice once in a rap and not layer it that way, plus that kind of monotonous sing-song a lot of rappers use is annoying. I'd like to hear a rapper who raps like you're having a conversation, not like, oooo looky, I'm rapping, pay attention to me. There, is that enough? Hahahahahaha!
What annoys me about a song is if a singer screams the lyrics to a point where I cannot understand them
Y is that so bad? A lot of rodk artists who scream r really easy to understand, if u take the time and listen to the song.
Oh no, here we go again...I agree with you, but you know a lot of other people around here don't.
I can never understand them. just a bunch of noise.
what bothers me about a song is when they're being over played on the radio. that's why i don't listen to the radio all that much.
Hmmmmmmm here we go
list of 5000000 items.
screaming, groweling, hissing
tasteless, artless, meaningless, rap lyrics
sex, hookers, hoes people this just gets old
drugs
guns
dying, why does every song now have the word dying "let it die"?
songs with synthesizers though there are a few exceptions
list end
Let me do some bitching now. Put on your bitching caps, cause this will be a while.
Dez, why can't you break out of your little turtle shell and except the fact that people don't want to spend a whole night analyzing a song to figure out what they are saying. I know people say that understanding those people is easy, however I dont' hear it. Other people have said it, such as SFA Idol, and Nimfedora. So it is not me.
Secondly why does society have to always sing about sex? Why is sex like a mind set of almost everyone now. We have loads of jokes, we have audio profiles, we have references to things, we have songs, we have tv, radio, even internet sites, screen names on messengers, movies, books, mags. We all laugh at it but you know what, I hear it so much I'm just sick of it. We have rap songs being sung by screen readers about shooting people and screwing people. We have rappers or crappers as it were, who talk or scream, no singing, but scream about blowing peoples' brains out with 10 m80's, and banging a 12 year old until their pecker is sticking out the other side. I'm sick of listening to this shit on tv and on the radio. Music nowadays is nothing but a waste of air time and its brain wash. Of course, however, no one will agree with me, and that's ok, despite the fac that Philadelphia is the dirtiest, most dangerous city next to New York City. I suppose that drive-by shootings/rapes are ok and I'm sure they have absolutely nothing to do with media/family issues/drugs. Yeah right.
There are songs from certain bands that I will listen to just for the pure humor of it, but nothing more.
Another very odd sight I'm seeing is that every single kid nowadays is drawn to heavy metal and rap and rnb and bullshit like this. Why doesn't any kid like jazz? Where did acoustic go? Where did classical music go? Where did classic rock go? Where did blues go? No one can even begin to answer my questions. Nimfedora is right, it is just noise. Oh, and where did lyrics that actually meant something go? I'll tell you where those went, they went right out the window. the govt has closed that window and has dead bolted it shut. They want kids to be obsessed with sex and violence. It is nothing more than a side track.
You want to know why society is the way it is? It is do to the media. No one will listen to me about this but I am telling you flat out this is the way it is! Who controls the media? Who controls tv/radio/etc? Who controls schools? If I didn't know better I'd probably be drawn to this shit as well. Blues, back when it was prime, was meant for singers to express themselves about family and their lives.
I garran damn tee no musician in the metal/rock/rnb/rap scene nowadays can play for me a solo if they saw it on paper let alone tell me every note in an A minor pentatonic scale.
Will we ever learn? I suppose that question I will never get a full answer to...
OK, where do I start here?
1. You make good points about rap today. I never said it was any good. I do however like rap from the 90's because it didn't completely focus on sex, drugs and hoes. There were themes of love and family issues and stuff like that. If you don't believe me, listen to 2Pac's stuff. Also, back then, it had more art to it than there is today. I totally agree with you that rap today is pointless, is the cause for little kids turning out to be drug addicts, whores, and criminals. Maybe not the only cause, but it's right up there with the fact that parents don't pay attention anymore to what their kids are doing. But it's not one of those things that's black and white, not all good or all bad, there's always exceptions.
2. I know how horrible Philly is, thank you, I live there 9 months of the year.
3. I don't really care if you believe me or not when I say I listen to classic rock. I'll just leave it at that because I shouldn't have to prove it. Like I said in the screamo topic, if you want a full list, I can give it to you, so stop trying to make me look bad.
4. What's wrong with analyzing lyrics? I have just as much right to do that as you have to sit and complain about how horrible the world is today. You may be right that the general quality of music has gone downhill, but at least of the new stuff I do listen to, mostly hard rock and metal, I take something positive from it. I don't care if these people are making up the experiences they write about in their songs or not. When I first got into rock music it was at a time in my life when I didn't think anybody cared about me or understood me. So to here lyrics that expressed how I felt was a relief. It made me realize I wasn't alone. You can call them dark and meaningless or whatever else you want, but I'm glad I was inspired by it instead of doing something stupid. Not to mention the heavier music has some of the best guitar solos ever played. Think of Metallica, and as much as I hate to admit it, Van Halen, and then think of how modern rock artists (note I said artists, as in people who actually have talent, not assholes who just want to make money) are inspired by them and continue to produce great music because the people before them were so great they wouldn't want it to be lost on the younger generations.
That's all I can think of for now. And I'm not trying to start another flame war, so don't even think about it. I'm just expressing my opinion, the same as you did, and that's all.
3. I don't really care if you believe me or not when I say I listen to classic rock. I'll just leave it at that because I shouldn't have to prove it. Like
I said in the screamo topic, if you want a full list, I can give it to you, so stop trying to make me look bad.
Oh, but didn't you say 80's rock sucked hmmmmm. And, you have given me a list in that topic, but that list contradicts your statement that all 80's music sucked. So I'm not even sure why you said that.
In today's society what is played is the garbage that destroys one's personality and mind. I never said there were never good rnb artists because way back when it was another form of expression it actually did mean something. Nowadays, what has made music go down hill is the idea of sex, sexual comments, references, etc. However, my point is this type of music that actually WAS good, is never played. So the fact there were good rnb and rap artists is mute for this conversation. They just don't play the good stuff anymore. That is for a reason as I've said.
4. What's wrong with analyzing lyrics? I have just as much right to do that as you have to sit and complain about how horrible the world is today.
I might be complaining about it but if you were to do a little research, which I know you and many others will not, you would find most if not all of what i'm saying is true. However, with your analyzing of lyrics, if they scream and I can't hear them the first time, it is apparent to me they are just angry, so I could really give a rats ass about them.
As far as cool guitar solos go, musical instruments can be put in place of human singing and I personally would say it is a lot better to listen to. I like songs without words...listen to some of bernie Williams's music it is classified as smooth jazz. But again, I know you won't because you aren't into that. But as a musician I am open to any type of music, barring it is creative and audible. This I will define as not just distorted noise and wailing guitar solos. As a personal preference as a guitarist, there is some things I know I probably could play but prefer not to. Namely guitarists who play metal guitar solos to a time signature that is so fast it'd make a calculator crash if it had to process it. Eddie Van Hailin is an amazing player and is the envy of any guitarist I can think of. Jimmy Page is another idol of guitarists nowadays. I see more and more talent as you go back in history of music.
Oh yeah forgot this:
When I first got into rock music it
was at a time in my life when I didn't think anybody cared about me or understood me.
If you are trying to make people feel sorry for you, then you are asking for the thumb tack to just be pressed in even more. After what i've been through I don't want to hear about how you felt pitty on yourself. Music, at that time, was my best friend. It forced me to do a lot of thinking. I never thought for one second that people would never understand me because what was happening to me at that time was also happening to others around me. Wanting people to feel sorry for you is quite selfish. Rather than having people understand you, how about trying to understand them. It is like someone trying to understand you. If they want to they will. Obviously you didn't want to try and understand others around you so you just assumed they didn't care about you. As for me, I don't use others as a crutch and it took me a while to learn this. My motto is that, if you aren't considerate to listen to me and reason out and understand what I am saying, then I will not give you the time of day at any argument. A K A, fuck you too.
Ok, time for me to jump in here and join this topic. Cody, I'll agree with u on some points. Those points being: 1. rap sucks now. I'll give an example of this from what I have heard. I don't think I'll post the exact thing, because doing it may get me banned from here, but who knows...anyway. I listen to a podcast of a morning radio show called "bob and the showgram" which is broadcasted in North Carolina. They did a segment, where one of their morning DJS, found on Urbandictionary.com, the meaning of the lyrics in the song "soldier boy". I had a pretty good idea of what those lyrics meant, but apparently, I was either way off, or I was right, and they didn't say them on the air. What they would have them do is have listeners who knew their kids liked that song call in, and tell them what the lyrics meant. Now, unless all of those people r extremely good at acting surprised, they did one hell of a number on them. Second. I felt the same way as dez once, and she's not trying to make people feel sorry for her. Though, I do like your statement "a.k.a. fuck u too". THat's one way of putting it i guess. Third, I also know Philly isn't the best place. We lived near it once, and kinda do now. FOurth, I will agree with cody on this one, where did all that music go? ITs gone to stations where they don't play it, and people just don't listen to it, or at least not the people u know do. But, if u like some of the old stuff so much, how comel u just don't go and tune your radio to an oldies station? Wouldn't that solve all your problems? Rap in the nineties, was better then todays, by a huge amount. I stopped listening to rap a while ago, and have never gone back except for a few songs. I turned my MP3 player to a rap station and listened through about 3 or 4 songs. I can tell u what they were about. Sex, Sex, Something about it being "my song", and a girl. SOrry these r all messed around, but I'm writing as things come to my head. O, and as far as I know in rock at least, I've never heard of an artist hissing or growling in a song, well, maybe hissing in evans blue, no wait, he's whispering. Kinda loudly, but...yeah. Just my thoughts.
Tuning to an oldies station will not get you that music. You'll get things like ELO and bands of that sort. stations like nj101.5 will not give you classic rock.
Then what about internet radio stations? Ever tried those?
internet radio stations are not the foremost choice of an average radio listener, and this is where I am coming from.
this is like trying to find the exact number of pie. In it, there is just no way around... those of us who are into the underground and are refined musicians would tend to study and probably rejoice in to the combinations of the (OLD) rhythm and blues and say, something like son. But for now what we have to do is stick around as performers playing the music that people calla nd label as "elevator" or "restaurant' or "fancy place" music. Believe me, i thought of such styles to be the same and to have the same labels. But please do answer, when all these kinds of music didn't exist, what did they play on the chain-growling elevators, restaurants and fancy places? exactly, classical music! This music is a good way to study composition (actual musical writing) and other aspects of formation of chords. This developpped into the jazz harmony (bach prelude I). Anyway, tossing these terms or what is muusic and what is not has become a loose matter and some terms are interchangeably used, so this topic goes to be in terms of apples and oranges. If kids are being influenced by the media and whatever, that is what you would call a nation. Well, i can tell you this: in colombia, we have stations entirely dedicated to the interesting side of music and others interested into the pop music and rap, (there are just a handful, from what, 3 to 5). The rest are things from the carribean and classical worlds. The jazz programs are pretty detailed and give a person more culture. I only see such fighting and whatever other arguments in the United states. There are places in other countries where we like to keep or music together. There is a lot of tradditional music being performed and the music from the 1900's hasn't gone away. If you ask for blues, jazz (fussions) and other kinds of music, the united States has very obscure artists... and very secluded spots. My opinion on all of this is that there should be indeed more constructive crytiquing and less defamation and more aceptance. If you had rejection or missunderstanding issues, it is best to accept everyone else and look inwards first. For one, you'll never have the most absolute judging on music. Having some judging takes knowledge, experience, and humility. For another, you will have to be a musician. If you start playing styles with which you aren't familiar, and explore and expand your horizons, you'll begin to apreciate music, especially, that "unfamiliar" kind of music. Of course most of you will not have the guts to leave that comfort zone and tune in to some charanga groups. What really bothers me about a song is how everything is stolen. If you have a lick or an idea, someone gets so inspired on it that they'll copy it or steal it or something. Other things are monotonous music. Music that just repeats and repeats itself... and that is all based on the same stuff. I like music with lyics and music without lyrics. I like music that is harmonic, music that has interesting solos, interesting mixes and sometimes even music that I don't understand. If people focus on the understanding so much, then why is Brazilian music so popular? it was at one point indeed. When people hear some kind of montuno pattern, they'll clasify it as "spanish" music, though things like salsa hit songs in English (your favorite 70s vallad into this setting) were not a big marketing success, 'cause again, people failed to understand and leave their comfort zone to apreciate other types of music. I am not saying that I don't apreciate rock and other contemporary styles--instead i try to incorporate things like power chords into my style. But for now, what annoys me about a song would depend a lot on the song itself.
That i will agre with. Song ideas r stolen a lot. But, that's another thing I'll go with. What bothers me about a song is the song.
Just so yall know,
Bob and The Show Gram is broadcast in the Raleigh/Durham NC area on G105. I've listened to it before while I was in raleigh a few times, getting ready for stuff.
Not sure what i hate the most about songs, but I do hate modern wrap/rnb. It sounds like crap.
I don't mind rock though, listen to classic rock mostly when I listen to rock since Mom pllays the local classic rock station on the radio in the car.
Music also helps me get through things, especially when things aren't going so well around here.
I lso listen to some Opo music.
That was suposed to be:
I also listen to Pop music.
Damn it, I can't type today!
If u would like to try bob and the showgram, its on their site as a downloadable podcast, or if u use itunes, search them.
I'm not a fan of live music either. Sounds loads better when the band or artist records an album in the studio, so I've never actually been to a live gig or concert. Also, when the songs're constantly repeated repeated repeated overplayed overplayed overplayed, yeah, you get my drift, on the radio, it's just, well, gur'r'r'r'r'r, borr''r''r'r'ring and I'm at the point where I just switch the blimming radio off or I'd just chuck it across the room in frustration, lmfao. But even then, when the Now CDs are released, all those overplayed blimming songs're on them, plus a couple of new ones which haven't even been advertised, let alone played, so those're kind of a mixed blessing.
Jen.
That's true. The Now CDS r a good kind of mixed CD.
there's nothing like live music. Of course the live gives you a lot of more insight into some musicians. Sometimes that's when their best improvisations are out and then is when you find out how much talent they have. I'd not depend on machines and computers to make the music I play soundd the way I like it. I am the one who plays the instrument.. more coloring, more volume, more tones? I add them myself.
